Linux for Beginners by Jason Cannon-P2P

If you want to learn how to use Linux, but don’t know where to start read on.

Knowing where to start when learning a new skill can be a challenge, especially when the topic seems so vast. There can be so much information available that you can’t even decide where to start. Or worse, you start down the path of learning and quickly discover too many concepts, commands, and nuances that aren’t explained. This kind of experience is frustrating and leaves you with more questions than answers.

Discrete Mathematics and Functional Programming by Thomas VanDrunen-P2P

This book provides a distinct way to teach discrete mathematics. Since discrete mathematics is crucial for rigorous study in computer science, many texts include applications of mathematical topics to computer science or have selected topics of particular interest to computer science. This text fully integrates discrete mathematics with programming and other foundational ideas in computer science. In fact, this text serves not only the purpose of teaching discrete math. It is also an introduction to programming, although a non-traditional one. Functional programming is a paradigm in which the primary language construct is the function and function here is essentially the same as what it is in mathematics. In the functional paradigm we conceive the program as a collection of composed functions, as opposed to a sequence of instructions (in the imperative paradigm) or a set of interacting objects (in the object-oriented paradigm). Dominant computer science curricula emphasize object-oriented and imperative programming, but competence in all paradigms is important for serious programmers and functional programming in particular may be appropriate for many casual programmers, too. For our purposes, the concepts underlying functional programming are especially grounded in those of discrete mathematics. Discrete mathematics and functional programming are equal partners in this endeavor, with the programming topics giving concrete applications and illustrations of the mathematical topics, and the mathematics providing the scaolding for explaining the programming concepts. The two work together in mutual illumination.

The Canadian Kingdom by D. Michael Jackson-P2P

An integral part of Canada’s political culture, the constitutional monarchy has evolved over the 150 years since Confederation to become a uniquely Canadian institution.

Canada inherited the constitutional monarchy from Britain even before Confederation in 1867. In the 150 years since then, the Crown has shaped, and been shaped by, Canada’s achievement of independence, its robust federalism, the unique identity of Quebec, and its relationship with Indigenous peoples.

What has this “Canadian Crown” contributed to the Canada of the twenty-first century? How is this historic yet resilient institution perceived today? The essays in this book respond to these questions from a variety of perspectives, encompassing the arts, the role of the vice-regal representatives, the Indigenous peoples, and the contemporary position of the monarch. In discussing whether there is a distinctly Canadian monarchy, the authors look beyond Canada’s borders, too, and explore how Canada’s development has influenced other Commonwealth realms.

Little Charley Ross by Norman Zierold-P2P

The “fascinating, hair-raising, suspenseful” account of a little boy abducted in broad daylight and the desperate manhunt to find him (The New York Times Book Review).

On July 1, 1874, four-year-old Charley Ross and his older brother, Walter, were playing in front of their stately Philadelphia home when a horse-drawn carriage pulled up with two men who offered candy and fireworks if the boys would ride with them.

Hours later, Walter came back, stating that they had ridden through the city until the men abandoned him in the street but kept Charley. Soon after, their father, Christian K. Ross, received a demand for $20,000 in return for his son.

Ross went to the police for help—and before long, the case became a national phenomenon. A popular song pleaded for the boy’s safe return. The Philadelphia police searched every home in the city, and thousands of people falsely reported that they had seen Charley or knew his whereabouts. Meanwhile, the kidnappers’ ransom letters were becoming more threatening and bizarre. The press, eager to fan the flames of hysteria, printed wholly fabricated stories and even accused Christian Ross of orchestrating the whole thing in order to hide the fact that Charley was illegitimate.

And then the men who took Charley went silent . . .

This is the chilling true story of a crime that transfixed a still-growing America, the unlikely series of events that produced the case’s most tantalizing clues, and the tragic twist of fate that plunged the Ross family back into darkness and haunted them for decades to come.
